Samoa Travel Guide
Plan Your Trip
Samoa is the heart of Polynesia — ten islands of rainforest, volcanic peaks, and white-sand beaches lapped by the warm Pacific. Less developed than its neighbours, Samoa keeps its culture intact: village life, the umu earth oven, fire knife dances, and Sunday toona'i feasts. This guide helps you plan how to get here and what to expect.
We have called Lalomanu Beach home for three generations. Below is what we tell every guest who asks us how to make the most of Samoa.
Practical Travel Tips
Getting to Samoa
Faleoloo International Airport (APW) on Upolu receives flights from Auckland, Sydney, Brisbane, and Fiji. From the airport, Lalomanu is roughly a 1 hour 30 minute scenic drive along the south coast.
Currency & payments
The Samoan Tala (WST) is the local currency, though USD is widely accepted at resorts. Bring cash for villages and small vendors; cards are accepted at most accommodation and larger restaurants.
What to pack
Light, breathable clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, swimwear, and modest attire for village visits. Snorkelling gear is useful but can be hired at Taufua Beach Fales.
Respecting local culture
Samoa is deeply traditional. Dress modestly outside the beach (cover shoulders and knees), ask before photographing people, and observe Sunday as a day of rest and church.
