Best Time to Visit Samoa

Warm all year, but the seasons change the trip

Samoa sits close to the equator, so there is no winter and no bad month: the sea stays around 28°C, the sand stays warm, and you can swim at Lalomanu every day of the year. What changes is the rain, the humidity, the whales and the crowds. Here is how we think about the calendar when guests ask us when to come.

The Seasons

Two Seasons, One Island

Roughly May to October

The Dry Season

The cooler, drier half of the year and the most popular time to visit. Days sit in the high twenties, the south-east trade winds keep the humidity down, nights are comfortable for sleeping, and rain usually comes as a passing shower rather than a soaking. July to October is the busiest stretch, and the best window if you want reliable beach weather.

Roughly November to April

The Wet Season

Warmer, more humid and greener, with heavier rain that tends to arrive in short, dramatic bursts — followed by sunshine. Samoa sits inside the South Pacific cyclone belt, and tropical systems are most likely between December and March, though most seasons pass without one affecting Upolu. This is the quietest, cheapest and most local time to be here.

Roughly June to November

Humpback Season

Humpback whales migrate through Samoan waters, typically between June and November. They are most often seen from the south coast cliffs and headlands, and sometimes from the beach at Lalomanu itself. If whales are on your list, aim for the later part of that window.

Plan Ahead

The Busy Weeks

School holidays in New Zealand and Australia, the July to October high season, White Sunday in early October, and the Christmas and New Year break all fill the south coast quickly. If you are travelling in those weeks, book your fale or villa well ahead.

Packing

What to Bring, Season by Season

Light, breathable clothing, swimwear, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen and a rash shirt for snorkelling. In the dry season add a light layer for the trade-wind evenings. In the wet season add a compact rain jacket, sandals that cope with puddles, and insect repellent — the island is at its greenest, and so are the mosquitoes. Modest clothing is respectful for village visits and Sunday church, and snorkelling gear can be hired from reception.

Weather & Season FAQs

What is the best month to visit Samoa?

For the most reliable beach weather, the dry season from roughly May to October is the safest bet, with July to October the driest and busiest stretch. If you want quiet beaches and lower prices, the wet season from November to April is warm and green, with rain that usually passes quickly.

Does it rain all day in the wet season?

Rarely. Tropical rain in Samoa usually arrives as a heavy burst lasting minutes to a couple of hours, often in the late afternoon or overnight, then clears. You will still get plenty of beach time, just with more dramatic skies.

How hot is Samoa?

Warm all year. Daytime temperatures sit around the high twenties to low thirties Celsius, the sea stays around 28°C, and the humidity is higher in the wet season. The trade winds of the dry season make the evenings noticeably more comfortable.

When can I see whales in Samoa?

Humpbacks usually pass through between June and November, with the strongest sightings in the second half of that window. The cliffs and headlands of the south coast near Lalomanu are good vantage points.

Is cyclone season a problem?

The South Pacific cyclone season runs roughly November to April, with the greatest risk between December and March. Most seasons pass without a cyclone reaching Upolu, but travel insurance and a flexible booking are sensible for trips in those months.
